Spanish photographer Bernardo Aja presents 'ENTREMUROS' at Instituto Cervantes Manila

Renowned Spanish photographer Bernardo Aja brings his compelling portrait series EntreMuros to Instituto Cervantes de Manila for an exclusive photo exhibition.

The exhibition, presented by the Embassy of Spain in the Philippines, AECID and Instituto Cervantes in Manila, in collaboration with De La Salle College of Saint Benilde and Intramuros Administration, will run from 10 April until 7 July, 2025, featuring portraits taken in Cebu, Negros, and Luzon in 2018.

Aside from offering a profound look into Filipino identity, Aja’s work captures characters who exist outside conventional narratives, blending meticulous detail with a subtle, ironic humor.

Bernardo Aja (Santander, Spain, 1973) has established himself as one of the most renowned photographers of his generation. He quickly rose to the international scene showcasing his works at the 2011 Florence Biennale, 2014 Lima Biennale and the 2015 Biennale hosted in Havana.

As a photojournalist, Bernardo Aja worked for some of the most important news agencies, including Reuters, EFE and AP, and has captured some of the world’s most recognizable figures such as the Dalai Lama, Bill Clinton, Pelé, Joan Manuel Serrat, Fidel Castro, José María Aznar, Juan Carlos I of Spain, and the Spanish Royal House, among others. Between 1997 and 1999 Aja was appointed as personal photographer of Alberto Fujimori, then president of Peru.



As a side activity of the event, on April 10 – 11, 2025, Aja will lead a hands-on photography workshop at Instituto Cervantes. The workshop, "Trades and Chores", guiding participants through Intramuros to document the people and professions that shape Manila’s historic district.
