Crocs is rising above the hate

Crocs, a brand that burst into the scene with their (in)famous clogs, has had its share of lovers and haters. But instead of backing down, they did what any brand that believes in its product does—that is to address the negativity and evolve.

The first time I encountered Crocs was several years ago at Punta Fuego when I saw a father and child who were about to take a dip wearing clogs that I thought, something I wouldn’t wear outside of the swimming pool area.

It was some three years ago that I had my first pair of the simple black clogs and looks aside, they are comfortable. It replaced my slippers whenever I would go on out of town assignments especially if the schedule involves long walks and beach breaks. The insole of the clogs that I had acted as a stable cushion and the holes actually served a purpose as it made sure that my feet were well-ventilated. And the strap, irritated as I was at times since it was so hard to slip out off, actually locked the clogs down when I had to venture into the waters, thus giving my soles of my feet the protection it needed.

The next pair I had was the Prepair Flip, which is geared towards those engaged in athletic activities. The idea was that after getting out of your tightly-laced athletic shoes, you slip into the Prepair which will help your feet recover after a strenuous activity. I had no complaints with it either as my feet did feel rested even after four hours of playing tennis. (Or maybe my body was expecting this since it is how the Prepair Flip was advertised to work.)

Crocs has since moved on from creating just clogs and flips as they recently introduced their Spring/Summer 2012 collection featuring an array of footwear that can actually complement your smart, casual looks.

The event was held at the rooftop of W Building at The Fort in Taguig City and Crocs showed that they indeed have something beyond clogs. The men’s line featured loafers, sneakers, lace-ups, and slip-ons that come in modest shades of white, black, gray, brown, and for the more adventurous wearers, there’s blue, green, red, and orange.

For the ladies, there are flats, slip-ons, trendy sandals, wedges and high heels that should go well with sleek dresses, skinny jeans, and even in office attire. Colors come in a combination of nudes, brights and snakeskin material.

“We acknowledge the love-hate relationship of people with our brand, but at the end of the day, Crocs has proven only one thing, that comfort really matters to the world,” said Franco Limjuco, Vice-President of Six Degrees, Crocs’ local distributor.

Limjuco added that this year is Crocs 10th year in the shoe industry and that the collection will stay true to the brand’s signature lightweight and comfortable aesthetics.

“We want to keep fans, and feet, happy,” he said.

Crocs likewise introduced its latest style ambassador, fashion blogger Laureen Uy, who will also serve as ambassador for the New Crocs New You (NCNY) campaign. Targeted at the stylish and modern Filipina, the campaign is running a regional contest where prizes include a trip and a shopping spree to the fashion city of the winner’s choice, as well as a year’s supply of Crocs and a feature in one of the Philippines’ top fashion magazines.
