Stage set to crown new Prudential Hong Kong Tennis Open singles champion

(Hong Kong) A clearly delighted Victoria Mboko swept to victory in a dramatic clash of the Canadians to seal her place in the final of the Prudential Hong Kong Tennis Open on her debut appearance at the tournament, setting up a finals clash against Cristina Bucsa.

Nineteen-year-old Mboko soaked up the early pressure from her friend and compatriot Leylah Fernandez who raced to a first set lead, before finally settling into the match to take the second set.

Victoria then began to dominate in the third set before finally securing double match points, which saw Fernandez uncharacteristically double-fault on second match point for a 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 final set win.

On securing her second WTA Tour final of 2025 here in Hong Kong, a happy Victoria, who is enjoying a break-out season said, “It’s never easy to play against a friend. Leylah was playing really well and, at first, I had to simply find a way to hang on to take any points I could get. As I got back into the game, in the end I was able to take the points at the critical moments. It’s been great to be here in Hong Kong and to be ending the year on such a good note.”

Earlier, Spain’s Bucsa took full advantage of a day’s rest, following the withdrawal of her quarter-final opponent, tournament No. 1 seed Belinda Bencic, to sweep past Australian No. 1 Maya Joint by 6-3, 6-1, and secure her place in today's finals.

A delighted Cristina acknowledged the day’s rest had been a distinct advantage. “Maya has had a long but obviously fantastic break-out year and yesterday’s game also went to three sets, so it’s clearly been tiring for her. I’m just happy to have progressed so far this week and am looking forward to the challenge of (tomorrow’s) finals.”

The concluding day of ladies’ doubles semi-finals saw China duo Jiang Xinyu and Wang Yafan secure a comprehensive 6-2, 6-2 victory over China’s Feng Shuo and Chinese Taipei’s Liang En-Shuo. They will challenge Momoko Kobori of Japan and Thailand’s Peangtarn Plipuech in today's Centre Court doubles finals.
