Instituto Cervantes, in collaboration with the Embassy of Spain in the Philippines and the University of Granada (UGR), is pleased to announce the upcoming talk “Lorca: Musical Theater and the Spirit of Flamenco,” to be held on Tuesday, March 24 at 5:30 PM at Instituto Cervantes de Manila – Intramuros Branch.
In this joint lecture, University of Granada professors Dr. María Ángeles López and Dr. Oswaldo Lorenzo will explore the integration of poetry, music, and theatricality in the work of Federico García Lorca, one of Spain’s most influential literary figures. Their presentation will examine how Lorca’s theatrical innovations helped transform the Spanish stage in the 20th century, combining popular rhythms, traditional songs, and lyrical structures that heighten dramatic expression.
A central theme of the talk is the “flamenco spirit,” a key element in Lorca’s aesthetic philosophy. The speakers will discuss how this spirit—rooted in authenticity, emotion, and a profound sense of cultural identity—shapes Lorca’s approach to musical theater. The lecture will also include short screenings from iconic works such as Bodas de sangre (Blood Wedding) and La casa de Bernarda Alba, illustrating how Lorca transforms music and flamenco into symbolic forces of passion, destiny, and freedom.
