Newcomer Dindo Caraig launches first single 'Kung Hindi Ikaw'

In his Batangueno accent, Dindo Caraig won over guests with his stories and his sincere appreciation for those who have been supporting him in his recent career triumphs.

The newcomer sang an impressive list of powerful ballads during his launch recently at Karma Lounge in Quezon City, including his first single “Kung Hindi Ikaw” that showcased his vocal range. His ability to hit high notes is something he credits coach Roeder Camanag with.

Under Camanag, himself a multi-talented actor, singer, dance in both theater and film, Dindo was able to use a technique that allowed him to tap into his authentic voice. Dindo’s journey to this pivotal moment hasn’t been without challenges. As a young singer, he idolized great OPM (Original Pilipino Music) artists, but he often found himself unintentionally imitating others’ styles.

“I’d mimic their sound instead of embracing my own,” Dindo explained. “It hindered my growth as an artist. I’m more confident now that I’ve found my real sound… and has expanded my vocal range, especially on those high notes.”

Caraig names Adam Lambert in particular as being one of the artists he looks up to with the way he sings and carries himself on the stage. Locally, he credits Katrina Velarde and Eric Santos.

“When Filipinos sing, they tend to copy the sound of their idols without realizing their own voice,” Camanag explains. “Pinarealize ko lang naman kay Dindo how to use his natural voice. The rule is that your singing voice should be an extension of your speaking voice.”

The soulful track, “Kung Hindi Ikaw”, is from Vehnee Saturno who is known for his exceptional songwriting prowess. It has already garnered attention for its emotive lyrics and captivating melody. Saturno was immediately impressed by Caraig’s vocals.

“The song really fits his voice,” Saturno shared. “Dindo possesses a unique range and voice quality that sets him apart.” For Caraig, recording a Vehnee Saturno song is an honor and a dream come true. “I’ve always admired Vehnee’s compositions,” he confessed. “To have the opportunity to breathe life into one of his creations is both thrilling and humbling.”

Caraig identifies himself as a part of the LGBTQ+ and he says he wants to be as free as he can early in his career. He likewise adds that there will be a couple of upbeat and fast songs on the horizon that his fans can look forward to.

"There’s so much more to learn,” he said with enthusiasm. “Every day is a chance to refine my craft, connect with my audience, and create music that resonates. Kung nakikita ko na patuloy sila sumusuporta sa akin, patuloy akong kakanta.” By Dexter R. Matilla
